What is Super Visa Insurance?

The Parent and Grandparent Super Visa is a multi-entry visitor visa that lets your parents or grandparents stay in Canada for up to five years per visit, with the option to renew for another two years without leaving the country. To qualify, IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) requires every Super Visa applicant to hold valid medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company — and those requirements changed in October 2022 when Canada opened the program to approved foreign insurers as well.

Without proof of an active, paid-in-full policy that meets every federal requirement, Super Visa applications are refused. Wings Travels handles the entire insurance side of that application for Calgary families — quoting, comparing carriers, issuing the certificate of insurance and submitting documentation in a format IRCC accepts.

2026 Super Visa Insurance Requirements (IRCC)

  • Minimum coverage: $100,000 CAD in emergency medical insurance.
  • Duration: at least 365 days (1 year) from the date of entry to Canada.
  • Issuer: a Canadian insurance company, or a foreign company approved by the Minister of IRCC.
  • Coverage scope: hospitalization, emergency medical care, and repatriation.
  • Paid in full: IRCC does not accept quotes — the policy must be fully paid before the application is submitted. Monthly-pay plans are available but the first instalment must be paid.
  • Valid on every entry to Canada and must remain available for inspection at the port of entry.

How much does Super Visa insurance cost in Calgary?

Your premium depends on the applicant's age, pre-existing medical conditions, deductible, and coverage amount. Below are typical 2026 monthly rates Calgary clients pay through Wings Travels for a standard $100,000 policy, 365-day term, $0 deductible, no pre-existing conditions.

Applicant age$100K coverage (monthly)$150K coverage (monthly)
40 – 54from $85from $110
55 – 59from $110from $140
60 – 64from $140from $175
65 – 69from $170from $210
70 – 74from $215from $265
75 – 79from $270from $330
80 – 84from $345from $420

Rates above are illustrative 2026 averages. Exact pricing depends on medical questionnaire answers. Pre-existing conditions and higher deductibles can lower these by 15–30%.

Which insurance companies do we compare?

We're an independent broker, which means we quote every major Canadian Super Visa carrier in one call and recommend the plan that actually fits your parent's health profile:

  • Manulife CoverMe Super Visa — the most recognised name, broadest pre-existing condition coverage.
  • GMS (Group Medical Services) — consistently among the lowest rates for healthy applicants under 70.
  • Travelance — flexible deductibles from $0 to $10,000, letting you fine-tune premiums.
  • TuGo — strong claims reputation, good for applicants with managed chronic conditions.
  • Destination Travel Group — competitive pricing for ages 70+.
  • 21st Century / Secure Travel — monthly-pay options for larger policies.

Monthly vs annual payment — which should you choose?

Super Visa insurance can be paid upfront for the full year (lump sum) or in monthly instalments.

  • Lump-sum is roughly 5–10% cheaper than paying monthly and includes an automatic partial refund if the parent leaves Canada early (subject to carrier rules).
  • Monthly-pay plans are better for cash flow and allow cancellation after the 365-day minimum. IRCC accepts monthly-pay policies as long as the first month is paid and the policy is scheduled to cover the full year.

Pre-existing medical conditions — can you still get coverage?

Yes. Almost every Super Visa applicant over 60 has at least one pre-existing condition (diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol). Carriers handle them differently:

  • Stable condition periods range from 90 days to 365 days. A "stable" 180-day condition means no medication change, no new symptoms and no hospitalization in that window.
  • Wings Travels' job is to match your parent's exact medical history to the carrier with the shortest stability requirement they still qualify for — the difference can be thousands of dollars in coverage exposure.

FAQ

Super Visa insurance,
answered.

Questions Calgary families ask us every week — with straight answers.

Which health insurance is best for Super Visa Canada?

No single company is "best" for everyone. For applicants under 60 with no pre-existing conditions, GMS and Travelance usually have the lowest premiums. For applicants over 65 or with diabetes/hypertension, Manulife and TuGo typically provide broader pre-existing condition coverage. Wings Travels compares all major carriers in one call so you can see which is cheapest for your specific parent.

How much is Super Visa insurance per month in Canada?

For a standard $100,000 policy with no pre-existing conditions, Calgary families typically pay between $85/month (age 40–54) and $345/month (age 80–84). Older applicants or those with pre-existing conditions will pay more. Monthly-pay plans are roughly 5–10% more expensive than paying the year up front.

Is insurance mandatory for Super Visa in Canada?

Yes. IRCC requires every Super Visa applicant to have at least $100,000 CAD in emergency medical coverage valid for a full year from a Canadian or Minister-approved foreign insurer. Applications without valid, paid-in-full insurance are refused.

Does TD offer Super Visa insurance?

TD Insurance does not currently offer a stand-alone Super Visa product. Calgary families usually buy Super Visa insurance from specialist carriers (Manulife, GMS, Travelance, TuGo, Destination), which is what Wings Travels brokers.

Can I cancel Super Visa insurance if my parent leaves Canada early?

Most carriers allow partial refunds if your parent returns home before the policy expires, provided no claim has been made. The refund is prorated and a small administrative fee (usually $25–$50) may apply. Always ask for the carrier's specific cancellation terms before purchasing.

Do you offer Super Visa insurance for Calgary residents only?

No — Wings Travels serves Super Visa families across Alberta: Calgary, Airdrie, Okotoks, Chestermere, Cochrane, Red Deer, Edmonton, Lethbridge and surrounding areas. Appointments can be entirely virtual (WhatsApp / email) for clients outside Calgary.

What documents do I need to apply?

Just two things to get an accurate quote: the applicant's date of birth and a list of any current medications or chronic conditions. For the final policy we'll also need full name as on passport, Canadian address where they'll be staying, and the planned arrival date.
