Northwest Calgary is a mix we book differently from the northeast. Alongside family travel to the subcontinent there is a steady stream of academic and medical travel — University of Calgary staff and students, Foothills and Alberta Children's Hospital personnel, and the conference and sabbatical trips that come with both. Those trips have different constraints: fixed dates, changeable return legs, and institutional invoicing.
Practically, that means we quote flexible fare classes more often for northwest clients than for anywhere else in the city. A cheap non-refundable ticket is a false economy when your conference date moves or your rotation changes. We will tell you when the flexible fare is worth the premium and when it is not.
The northwest also books a high volume of European and UK travel — London, Dublin, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and increasingly Portugal and Iceland. Transatlantic fares out of Calgary behave predictably: they bottom out roughly three to four months ahead and climb steeply inside six weeks. If you know your summer dates in February, that is when to book.

Stoney Trail north and east is almost always faster than cutting through the city on 16th Avenue or Crowchild, even though the distance looks longer. This is the single most common routing mistake northwest travellers make.
International departures leave from the International Terminal. Arriving via Stoney Trail from the north, stay in the international lanes rather than exiting at the first Departures sign.
For a 6am international departure, leaving a northwest address around 3am is sensible. Add fifteen minutes in winter — Stoney Trail's northern stretch is exposed and drifts badly in wind.

It depends on whether your dates can move. For a fixed family holiday, usually not. For a conference, a rotation, or a trip built around someone else's schedule, the change fee on a cheap non-refundable ticket often exceeds what the flexible fare would have cost up front.
