Choosing your Mexican coast

Mexico is not one destination and the choice of coast matters more than the choice of resort. The Caribbean side — Cancun and the Riviera Maya — has the postcard water, the largest concentration of resorts, and the cenotes and Mayan sites. The Pacific side, meaning Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos, has dramatic scenery, better whale watching, and a different feel entirely. Both fly direct from Calgary for much of the year.

The single most useful thing a Calgary traveller can know about the Caribbean coast is sargassum. Between roughly April and August, seaweed can arrive on Cancun and Riviera Maya beaches in volumes that resorts cannot fully clear, and it is the most common cause of a disappointing week on that coast. It is seasonal, it varies year to year, and it does not affect the Pacific side at all.

That gives you a straightforward planning rule. For a winter trip between December and March, the Caribbean coast is at its best and is the obvious choice. For late spring and summer, Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos avoid the sargassum question entirely. We would rather tell you this before you book than have you discover it from your balcony.

Before you book

Mexico by season and coast.

Sargassum season

Roughly April to August on the Caribbean coast, varying year to year. Resorts clear what they can but volumes sometimes exceed that. If you are travelling in those months and the beach matters, the Pacific coast avoids the issue completely.

Cancun vs Riviera Maya

Cancun's hotel zone is closer to the airport, livelier, and better for shorter stays. The Riviera Maya spreads south through Playa del Carmen and Tulum, is quieter and more spread out, and involves a longer transfer — worth knowing when travelling with young children.

Los Cabos beaches

Cabo's scenery is spectacular but many beaches have currents that make swimming unsafe, and the swimmable ones are specific. If your family wants to swim off the beach rather than in the pool, confirm the property before booking — this catches people out regularly.

Hurricane season

June to November, with peak risk from mid-August to early October. Travel then is materially cheaper, and this is the clearest case on the page for taking cancellation and interruption cover seriously.

FAQ

All-inclusive questions,
answered.

Should I go to the Caribbean coast or the Pacific coast?

For December through March, the Caribbean side — Cancun and the Riviera Maya — is at its best. For late spring and summer, Puerto Vallarta or Los Cabos avoids sargassum season entirely. The coasts feel quite different, so the season should usually decide it.

What is sargassum and will it affect my trip?

Seaweed that arrives on Caribbean-coast beaches roughly between April and August, sometimes in volumes resorts cannot fully clear. It varies year to year and is the most common cause of a disappointing beach week on that coast. It does not affect the Pacific side.

Is Cancun or the Riviera Maya better for young children?

Cancun's hotel zone, generally, because the airport transfer is much shorter. The Riviera Maya stretches a long way south, and an extra ninety minutes in a transfer van at the end of a travel day is a real consideration with small children.

Can we swim off the beach in Los Cabos?

Only at certain beaches. Much of the Cabo coastline has strong currents that make swimming genuinely unsafe, and the swimmable beaches are specific rather than general. If beach swimming matters, confirm the individual property before booking.

When is hurricane season in Mexico?

June through November, peaking from mid-August to early October. Prices drop accordingly. If you travel in that window, cancellation and interruption cover is worth the cost rather than being an optional extra.
