Seasonal YYC-LIR direct flights

Costa Rica
from Calgary.

Winter-season direct YYC-Liberia (LIR) flights with Air Transat and WestJet, plus year-round one-stop options via Toronto, Houston, or Panama City. All-inclusive beach resorts in Guanacaste, plus ecotourism combos with Arenal Volcano, Monteverde, and Manuel Antonio.

Two very different Costa Ricas

Costa Rica is really two holidays, and the mistake that costs travellers the most is not choosing between them deliberately. Guanacaste in the dry northwest is where the beach resorts are, and it behaves much like other Central American sun destinations. The interior — Arenal, Monteverde, the cloud forest, and the Pacific and Caribbean rainforest coasts — is what the country is actually famous for, and it is not a beach holiday.

That distinction drives a decision most people make by accident: which airport. Liberia serves Guanacaste and the northwest beaches. San Jose serves the capital and the interior. Choosing the wrong one turns a short transfer into a four or five hour drive across the country, and it is the single most common planning error we correct on Costa Rica bookings.

The other thing worth knowing is that the two seasons are genuinely different rather than nominally so. The dry season runs roughly December to April with reliable sun and peak pricing. The green season from May to November brings afternoon rain, much lower prices, dramatically better wildlife viewing, and landscape that actually looks like the photographs. For a wildlife-led trip the green season is arguably the better choice, not merely the cheaper one.

Getting Costa Rica right.

Liberia or San Jose

Liberia for the Guanacaste beach resorts; San Jose for the interior, Arenal, and Monteverde. Booking into the wrong airport turns a short transfer into a cross-country drive, and it is the most common mistake on this destination.

Dry season vs green season

December to April is dry, sunny, and priced at peak. May to November brings afternoon rain, much lower prices, and considerably better wildlife viewing. For a nature-led trip the green season is a genuine choice rather than a compromise.

Combine beach and interior

The most satisfying Costa Rica itineraries pair a few nights of rainforest or volcano with beach time rather than committing entirely to one. It needs planning around internal transfers, which are slower than the map suggests.

Not an all-inclusive country

Outside the Guanacaste resorts, Costa Rica is a lodge-and-transfer destination rather than a bracelet-and-buffet one. Budget for meals and internal travel rather than expecting a single upfront price to cover everything.

FAQ

All-inclusive questions,
answered.

Should I fly into Liberia or San Jose?

Liberia for the Guanacaste beach resorts in the northwest; San Jose for the interior, Arenal, and Monteverde. This is the most consequential decision on a Costa Rica booking — the wrong airport means a four or five hour drive rather than a short transfer.

Is the green season worth avoiding?

Not necessarily. May to November brings afternoon rain but also much lower prices, far better wildlife viewing, and greener landscape. Mornings are frequently clear. For a nature-focused trip, many travellers prefer it to the dry season.

Can I do both beach and rainforest in one trip?

Yes, and the best Costa Rica itineraries do. It requires planning around internal transfers, which take longer than the distances suggest because of the roads and terrain. A week is enough for two areas; three is rushing.

Are there all-inclusive resorts in Costa Rica?

In Guanacaste, yes. Elsewhere the country works on lodges, small hotels, and transfers rather than all-inclusive resorts, so budget for meals and internal travel separately rather than expecting one upfront price to cover the trip.

When is the best time for wildlife?

The green season, May through November, when the landscape is at its most active and lush. Dry-season wildlife viewing is still good, particularly around water sources where animals concentrate, but the green season is better for most species.
