Visa-on-arrival or advance visa

UAE visa
from Canada.

Canadian passport holders receive a 30-day free visa-on-arrival to the UAE. For longer stays (60-day, 90-day multi-entry), 5-year multi-entry visas, or for non-Canadian passport holders resident in Canada, Wings Travels processes advance UAE visas through Emirates, Etihad, or approved UAE agencies.

For most Canadian passport holders the UAE is the easiest destination on this list, because entry is generally granted on arrival for tourism without any advance application. If that describes you, the useful part of this page is not the application process but the transit and stopover planning that follows — and confirming the current position before you fly, since entry rules here have changed more than once.

The pre-arranged visa route matters for two groups. The first is people living in Canada on a passport that does not qualify for visa-on-arrival, where a sponsored visa is required in advance. The second is anyone whose plans do not fit the standard tourist pattern: extended stays, certain business activity, or travel with documentation that raises questions at the border.

The genuinely useful angle for Calgary travellers is different from either. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are the dominant connecting points for YYC passengers heading to the subcontinent, which means a large number of our clients pass through the UAE without intending to visit it. A long connection there can be converted into a free stopover of a day or several, and on many itineraries this costs nothing extra in airfare.

How Wings Travels helps

Most of our UAE work is not visa work at all — it is making the connection work in your favour. We check the current entry position for your specific passport rather than assuming the Canadian one applies, arrange sponsored visas where they are needed, and build stopovers into subcontinent itineraries where the fare permits it at no additional cost. For families connecting through Dubai or Abu Dhabi with elderly parents, we deliberately book longer connections and attach mobility assistance to the reservation rather than leaving it to be requested on the day.

Before you file

Stopovers and connections through the UAE.

Free stopovers

On many Gulf carrier itineraries from Calgary, breaking the journey in Dubai or Abu Dhabi for a few days adds nothing to the fare. If you are flying to India or Pakistan via the UAE anyway, ask before booking — it is one of the better value additions available on this routing.

Long connections

A connection beyond a few hours is usually more comfortable spent outside the airport. Whether you can leave depends on your nationality and the current entry position, so confirm it rather than assuming, particularly if you hold a non-Canadian passport.

Summer heat

Between roughly June and September, daytime conditions make an outdoor stopover genuinely unpleasant. If you are choosing when to break a journey, the winter months are a materially better experience for the same money.

Onward connections

Dubai and Abu Dhabi are large, busy hubs and inter-terminal transfers take longer than the printed minimum connection time suggests. For a family travelling with elderly parents and checked bags, book a longer connection deliberately.

FAQ

United Arab Emirates visa questions.

Do Canadians need a visa for the UAE?

Generally not for tourism — entry is usually granted on arrival for Canadian passport holders. Rules have changed more than once, so confirm the current position before you fly. Advance visas mainly matter for non-Canadian passport holders resident here, and for stays or purposes outside the standard tourist pattern.

Can I stop over in Dubai on the way to India or Pakistan?

Frequently yes, and often at no extra airfare. Gulf carriers routing through Dubai and Abu Dhabi commonly allow the journey to be broken for several days without increasing the fare. It is worth asking at the time of booking, because it is harder to add afterwards.

How long should I allow for a connection in Dubai?

Longer than the minimum connection time suggests. These are very large airports and inter-terminal transfers take real time. If you are travelling with elderly parents or several checked bags, book a deliberately longer connection rather than the tightest legal one.

When is the best time to stop over?

The winter months. Between roughly June and September the heat makes an outdoor stopover unpleasant, and you will spend it indoors. The same stopover between November and March is a completely different experience for the same price.

I hold a non-Canadian passport and live in Canada. What applies to me?

That depends on your nationality, and the visa-on-arrival position for Canadians will not necessarily apply to you. We check your specific passport against the current requirements and arrange a sponsored visa in advance where one is needed.
