02 · About this route

Flying to South America
from Calgary.

South America trips from Calgary typically route through Toronto, Houston, or Panama City, with total travel times of 14-20 hours. We book LATAM, Avianca, Air Canada, and United on this route, often with better-than-online wholesale rates.

For bucket-list trips — Machu Picchu, Iguazu Falls, the Galapagos, Patagonia — we build multi-country itineraries with connecting regional flights included. One invoice, one agent handling the whole trip.

Visa requirements vary. Most countries are visa-free for Canadians, but Bolivia requires an advance visa and Brazil occasionally adjusts rules. Our desk stays on top of the changes.

South America flights,
answered.

How long does it take to fly from Calgary to South America?

Between roughly 14 and 24 hours depending on destination and routing. Bogota and Lima are the quickest to reach; Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo are among the longest. Itineraries connect through US hubs, Panama City, or occasionally Europe — there is no direct service from Calgary.

When is the best time to travel?

Seasons are reversed below the equator, so the South American summer runs December through February — peak season in Patagonia and on the Argentine and Brazilian coasts. The shoulder months of March to May and September to November often give better weather-to-price value.

Do Canadians need visas for South America?

Most of the continent has been visa-free for Canadian passport holders for tourism, but Brazil's requirement has been introduced, delayed, and reinstated more than once in recent years. Verify Brazil specifically before booking rather than relying on what was true last season.

Do I need a yellow fever vaccination?

For parts of Brazil, Peru, Colombia, and Bolivia it is required or recommended, and some countries require proof for onward regional travel. The certificate takes ten days to become effective, so this needs deciding well before departure.

Can you book Machu Picchu, Patagonia, and Galapagos add-ons?

Yes. These need permits, internal flights, and timed entries that sell out well ahead — Machu Picchu and Galapagos in particular. Getting to Lima or Quito is the easy part; the internal logistics are where planning matters and where lead time is genuinely limited.

Is it worth flying into one country and out of another?

For a multi-country trip, almost always. South American distances are large and backtracking to your arrival city can cost a full day of travel. Open-jaw itineraries usually price competitively and save that day.
